Glendale prohibits electrically charged fences, barbed wire, razor wire, chicken wire, and fiberglass in residential zones per GMC 30.30.010. Wood, masonry, and decorative metal are acceptable. Chain-link allowed only if screened by vegetation.
In residential zones (ROS, R1R, R1), fences must be made of wood, masonry, decorative metal (e.g., wrought iron), or other materials approved by the Director of Community Development. Chain-link is permitted only if screened by vegetation from adjacent parcels and cannot be visible from the adjacent public street. Unscreened chain-link is allowed for tennis courts and recreational facilities. In the Fence Overlay Zone (F) in North Glendale, no fence may be electrically charged or made of barbed wire, razor wire, chicken wire, chain-link, fiberglass, or plain block. All retaining walls visible to surrounding properties must use stone, textured concrete, or decorative masonry block.
Non-compliant materials must be replaced or screened. Violations in the Fence Overlay Zone are subject to Code Compliance enforcement and removal orders.
