Article IV of the Chicago Municipal Code (Sections 13-96-120 et seq.) regulates fences. All typical residential fence materials are permitted including wood, aluminum, steel, vinyl PVC, and composite. Barbed wire or other hazardous materials are not allowed in residential areas. Barbed wire and razor wire may not be installed less than 7 feet above the ground and only with an explicit permit application describing the installation. Fences in the required front setback of residential properties are limited to 54 inches if more than 20 percent opaque or solid. Non-combustible open fences may reach 10 feet and solid non-combustible fences may reach 8 feet in height. All fences must be designed and built to withstand horizontal wind pressure of at least 30 pounds per square foot from any direction. Fence posts must be set in concrete.
Using prohibited materials such as barbed wire in residential areas below 7 feet is a code violation. Fences not meeting structural or material requirements may be subject to removal orders and fines from the Department of Buildings.
