Schaumburg allows wood, vinyl, chain-link, ornamental metal, and composite fencing materials in residential areas. Barbed wire, razor wire, and electric fencing are prohibited in residential zones. Chain-link fences in front yards are generally not permitted.
Under the Schaumburg Zoning Ordinance, approved fencing materials for residential districts include wood (pressure-treated, cedar, redwood), vinyl/PVC, chain-link (side and rear yards only), ornamental wrought iron or aluminum, and composite materials. Barbed wire, razor wire, concertina wire, and electric fencing are prohibited in all residential districts. Chain-link fencing is not permitted in front yards β only decorative fencing (wood, vinyl, ornamental metal) is allowed forward of the front building line. All fencing materials must be maintained in good condition; fences with significant rot, rust, leaning, or missing components must be repaired or replaced. Privacy slats in chain-link fences are permitted in side and rear yards. Contact Community Development at (847) 895-4500 for material approvals.
Using prohibited materials results in fines of $50 to $250 and a requirement to replace the non-compliant fence. Poorly maintained fences may be cited under property maintenance standards.
