Schaumburg limits residential fence heights to 4 feet in front yards and 6 feet in side and rear yards. Corner lots have additional visibility triangle restrictions. Fences above 6 feet require a variation from the Zoning Board of Appeals.
Under the Schaumburg Zoning Ordinance, fences in residential districts are limited to 4 feet in height in front yards (measured from the front property line to the front building line) and 6 feet in side and rear yards. On corner lots, fences within the visibility triangle (typically 25 feet from the intersection of the two property lines) must not exceed 30 inches to maintain clear sightlines for traffic safety. Decorative pillars or posts may extend up to 6 inches above the permitted fence height. Fences taller than 6 feet require a zoning variation approved by the Zoning Board of Appeals. Height is measured from the finished grade on the higher side of the fence. Contact Community Development at (847) 895-4500 for specific requirements.
Fence height violations carry fines of $50 to $250. The property owner may be required to reduce the fence to the permitted height within a specified compliance period.
