Skokie limits residential fences to 4 feet in front yards and 6 feet in side and rear yards. Corner lots have additional sight-line restrictions at intersections. All fences require a permit from Community Development before installation.
Under Skokie's zoning ordinance, residential fence heights are regulated by location on the lot. Front yard fences (between the front building line and the street) are limited to 4 feet and must be of an open or decorative style. Side and rear yard fences may be up to 6 feet tall. On corner lots, fences within the sight triangle at the street intersection are limited to 3 feet to preserve visibility. Fence materials and finishes must face neighboring properties with the finished side out. Swimming pool enclosure fences have separate requirements (typically minimum 4 feet with self-closing gate). Barbed wire, electrified fences, and chain link in front yards are generally prohibited in residential zones. A permit from Community Development is required for all new fences. Non-compliant fences may be required to be lowered, removed, or reoriented. Fines range from $50 to $500 per violation. Installing without a permit results in stop-work orders and double fees. Unresolved violations may accrue daily fines.
