Skokie prohibits barbed wire, razor wire, and electrified fences in residential districts. Chain link fencing is restricted in front yards. Improvised fencing from pallets, scrap, or non-durable materials is not permitted under the property maintenance code.
Skokie's zoning and property maintenance codes restrict fence materials based on safety and aesthetic standards. Barbed wire and razor wire are prohibited in all residential zones. Electrified fences are not permitted in residential districts except for underground pet containment systems (invisible fences). Chain link fencing is generally prohibited in required front yards and may require decorative upgrades in certain districts. Solid walls exceeding 4 feet in front yards are prohibited to preserve neighborhood visibility. Barbed wire may be permitted in industrial zones with a special permit. Pallet fences, tarp walls, and other non-durable constructions are considered property maintenance violations regardless of the zone. Historic districts may have additional material restrictions. Prohibited materials must be removed upon notice. Fines range from $100 to $500 per violation, with daily accrual for continued non-compliance. Electrified residential fences must be disabled immediately and may result in liability for injuries.
