The Village of Arlington Heights zoning ordinance restricts fence materials in residential zoning districts. Prohibited materials include barbed wire, razor wire, concertina wire, electrified fencing, and sheet metal. Approved materials for residential fences include wood (cedar, redwood, pressure-treated), vinyl/PVC, ornamental wrought iron or aluminum, masonry, and chain-link. Chain-link fences in front yards may be subject to additional aesthetic restrictions. Privacy slats may be inserted into chain-link fences. All materials must be uniform and consistent in appearance. Fences constructed of scrap materials, pallets, or makeshift materials are not permitted. Fence materials must be weather-resistant and maintained in good condition. Temporary construction fencing requires separate approval. Contact Community Development at (847) 368-5200 for questions about specific materials.
Fences using prohibited materials may receive immediate code enforcement notices requiring removal or replacement. Fines may apply for continued non-compliance.
