Arlington Heights prohibits keeping chickens, roosters, and most livestock in standard residential zoning districts. The village zoning ordinance limits animal husbandry activities to appropriately zoned areas.
The Village of Arlington Heights zoning ordinance prohibits the keeping of chickens, roosters, ducks, geese, turkeys, goats, sheep, pigs, horses, and other farm animals on residential property in standard residential zoning districts (R-1 through R-5, and residential planned developments). This prohibition applies regardless of lot size. There is no backyard chicken permit program. The village has not adopted an urban agriculture or backyard poultry ordinance allowing exceptions. Keeping livestock is considered an agricultural use incompatible with the residential character of the community. Residents interested in agricultural activities are directed to nearby community gardens and Cook County agricultural programs. Violations should be reported to Community Development at (847) 368-5200. Standard household pets (dogs, cats) are regulated under the animal control ordinance.
Keeping prohibited animals on residential property results in code enforcement action, fines, and orders to remove the animals. Fines may range from $50 to $750 per offense.
