Fire pit rules in Arlington Heights, IL β also called outdoor burning, recreational fire, or open flame ordinances β cover fuel types, clearances, and when burning is allowed.
Arlington Heights Fire Prevention Bureau regulates outdoor fire pits under the village's fire code. Portable and permanent fire pits are allowed in residential backyards with conditions including setback distances from structures, fuel type restrictions, and size limits. Open burning is generally prohibited, but contained recreational fires in approved fire pits are permitted. Arlington Heights Fire Department at (847) 368-5230 enforces fire pit regulations.
Arlington Heights permits recreational fires in approved fire pits in residential backyards under conditions specified by the fire code. Fire pits must be located at least 15 feet from any structure, property line, or combustible material. Fires must be contained in a noncombustible container or a permanent fire pit with a spark screen. Only clean, dry firewood or manufactured fire logs are permitted β burning trash, yard waste, construction debris, or treated lumber is prohibited. Fire pits must not exceed 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height. An adult must attend the fire at all times, and a means of extinguishment (garden hose or fire extinguisher) must be readily accessible. The Fire Prevention Bureau may impose temporary burn bans during high fire danger conditions or air quality alerts. Natural gas and propane fire pits/tables are also permitted and generally have fewer restrictions since they produce less smoke and sparking.
Violations of fire pit rules can result in fines and the fire being ordered extinguished immediately. Burning prohibited materials may result in additional citations. Fines start at $75 per offense. Contact Arlington Heights Fire Prevention at (847) 368-5230.
