Fire pit rules in Evanston, IL β also called outdoor burning, recreational fire, or open flame ordinances β cover fuel types, clearances, and when burning is allowed.
Evanston allows recreational fire pits on residential property with restrictions. Fire pits must be at least 15 feet from any structure, property line, or combustible material. Fires are limited to clean, dry wood and must be supervised at all times. The fire must be completely extinguished before leaving it unattended.
Under Evanston Fire Prevention Code (Title 4, Chapter 16), recreational fires in portable fire pits, chimineas, and similar devices are permitted in rear yards only. The fire must be contained in a noncombustible container or fire ring. Maximum fire size is 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height. The 15-foot setback applies to structures, fences, overhanging branches, and property lines. Only clean, dry firewood is allowed β no trash, treated lumber, leaves, or construction debris. A means of extinguishment (garden hose or fire extinguisher) must be readily accessible. Evanston Fire may issue a burn ban during dry or high-wind conditions. Contact Evanston Fire at (847) 866-5923 for questions.
Fire pit violations carry fines of $50 to $250. Fires that spread or cause property damage may result in additional charges. The fire department may extinguish any fire deemed unsafe and the property owner may be billed for response costs.
