Oak Lawn does not allow backyard chickens, roosters, or other poultry in residential zoning districts. The village code prohibits keeping farm animals and fowl on residential properties.
Under Oak Lawn Village Code, keeping chickens, roosters, ducks, geese, turkeys, or other poultry is prohibited on residential property. The village's dense suburban character and zoning code do not permit farm animals in residential districts, which includes the vast majority of Oak Lawn. Unlike the City of Chicago, which permits hens (but not roosters), Oak Lawn has not adopted a backyard chicken ordinance. Residents wishing to keep poultry must relocate to a jurisdiction that allows them. Violations are enforced by Code Enforcement and Animal Control through Cook County. Only traditional household pets such as dogs, cats, caged birds, small mammals, and fish are permitted in residential zones, subject to licensing and limit-per-household rules.
Keeping prohibited poultry or livestock in Oak Lawn can result in citations and daily fines of $50 to $500 until the animals are removed. Repeat violations can result in formal abatement orders and removal of animals by Cook County Animal Control.
