St. Clair County restricts barbed-wire and electric fences. Barbed wire below ten feet above ground and electrically charged fences are barred except in agricultural or rural residential districts where they pose no undue hazard.
Section 40-5-5(B) provides that no barbed wire below ten feet above ground level or other sharp-pointed fence, and no electrically charged fence, may be erected or maintained except in agricultural or rural residential districts where they do not constitute an undue hazard. This means barbed-wire and electric fences are generally prohibited in single-family and other residential districts. The restriction applies only in the unincorporated county; municipalities set their own material rules.
Erecting a prohibited barbed-wire or electric fence is a Class B misdemeanor, fined $50 to $500 plus costs (Sec. 40-11-10), each day a separate offense.
