Suwanee UDC prohibits barbed wire, razor wire, and electrified fencing in all residential zones. Chain link restricted to side/rear yards. No visible posts or unfinished construction facing neighboring properties.
Suwanee's Unified Development Code prohibits barbed wire, razor/concertina wire, and electrified fencing in all residential (R-) and mixed-use (MU-) districts, consistent with Gwinnett County practice. Chain-link fencing is restricted to side and rear yards only and is generally prohibited in required front yards or facing a public street. When a fence is erected, the finished/smooth side (rails and pickets) must face the adjoining property or public right-of-way; exposed posts and unfinished framing facing outward violate the aesthetic requirements of the UDC. Maximum residential fence height is typically 6 ft in rear/side yards and 4 ft in front yards, with clear sight-triangle setbacks at driveways and corner lots. Invisible underground pet containment systems are not regulated as fences. Non-residential zones may permit barbed wire at heights above 8 ft where screening security is needed. Permit application through the Suwanee Planning & Development Department is required for most new fences.
Non-conforming materials must be removed or replaced. Code enforcement follows a notice-and-cure process; continued violations may result in municipal court citations with fines up to $1,000 per day under Suwanee's general penalty provisions.
