Worcester County, MA Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Worcester County does not regulate fence materials — rules are entirely municipal because county government was abolished in 1998. The City of Worcester Zoning Ordinance generally permits wood (stockade, picket, board), vinyl, composite, chain-link, wrought iron, and aluminum fencing in residential zones. Chain-link is restricted in front yards in Worcester's higher-density residential districts (RG-5, RL-7). Barbed wire and razor wire are prohibited in all Worcester residential zones and permitted only in industrial (MG) districts by special permit. The finished (smooth) side must face the abutting property. Local Historic Districts across Worcester County including the Crown Hill Local Historic District, the Pakachoag Hill (Auburn) district, the Sturbridge Village area, the Grafton Common district, and the Petersham Common district all require Historic District Commission approval for fence material choices under MGL c. 40C. Stone walls — a defining feature of New England landscapes across Worcester County's hill towns (Princeton, Hardwick, Petersham, Barre) — receive additional protection; disturbance of historic stone walls on public ways is prohibited under MGL c. 84 §14.
