For ordinary residential fences, Greenville County zoning does not prohibit or mandate particular materials, colors, or opacity. The code addresses materials only in screening and buffer contexts: required buffers and vehicle-storage screening must be an opaque wall, fence, or evergreen plant material, and pool side-yard screens must reach 6 feet in wall, fence, berm, or evergreen form. Berms used as screening must have a side slope no steeper than 3:1. Outside those specific screening rules, homeowners in the unincorporated county choose their own fence materials. Cities may impose additional material rules within their limits.
Using a non-conforming material where opaque screening or a buffer is required violates the Zoning Ordinance; misdemeanor penalties apply under Sec. 13:3.
