Pools and spas require a barrier at least 48 inches tall with self-closing, self-latching gates per Alaska-adopted IRC. AMC construction permits apply. Indoor pools in heated structures are exempt.
Alaska adopts the International Building Code and International Residential Code with amendments (13 AAC 50). Outdoor residential pools and spas require a barrier fence no less than 48 inches tall, measured from finished grade on the exterior side. Gates must be self-closing, self-latching, and open outward from the pool area, with latch release on the pool side at 54 inches or higher. Above-ground pools with walls 48 inches or taller can use the pool wall as the barrier, provided ladders are removable or locked. Most Anchorage pools are indoor because of climate; indoor pools inside a locked, heated structure meet the barrier requirement through the building envelope. Building permits are required for all pool installations through Development Services.
