Full Breakdown

Under AMC 21.07.080.H, fences in most residential districts (R-1, R-1A, R-2A, R-2D, R-2M, R-3, R-4, R-4A, R-5, R-7) can't top 4 feet in a front setback or 6 feet in a side or rear setback. That side/rear limit jumps to 8 feet if the fence runs along an alley across from, or abuts, a nonresidential district. No fence anywhere in the municipality may exceed 8 feet unless the code specifically allows it elsewhere (electrical substation enclosures, for example, can go to 10 feet). A fence may sit anywhere within the property or right on the lot line, but it can't block or divert natural drainage onto a neighbor's land.

Violations & Fines

Fences over the applicable height limit, or built without regard to drainage flow, are a zoning violation subject to code enforcement correction orders.
