Will County adopts the 2018 IRC including Appendix G pool barrier requirements, enforced through Land Use Department and municipal building departments. Barriers must be at least 48 inches tall measured from the ground outside the barrier, with no openings allowing passage of a 4-inch sphere. Gates must open away from the pool, be self-closing and self-latching, with release mechanism at least 54 inches above grade. Above-ground pools with walls 48+ inches may serve as barrier if ladder is removable or gated. Where a dwelling wall forms part of the barrier, doors must have alarms (ANSI/UL 2017) sounding for 30+ seconds when opened. Hot tubs may substitute a lockable safety cover meeting ASTM F1346. Joliet §9-74, Bolingbrook §4-5, Plainfield §9-45, Romeoville §22-43, and New Lenox §151-10 each incorporate these requirements. Openings in chain link must not exceed 1.75 inches. Final inspection required before pool filling.
