Gates must open away from the pool, be self-closing and self-latching, with release mechanism at least 54 inches above grade. Above-ground pools with walls 48+ inches may serve as barrier if ladder is removable or gated. Where a dwelling wall forms part of the barrier, doors must have alarms (ANSI/UL 2017) sounding for 30+ seconds when opened. Hot tubs may substitute a lockable safety cover meeting ASTM F1346. Joliet §9-74, Bolingbrook §4-5, Plainfield §9-45, Romeoville §22-43, and New Lenox §151-10 each incorporate these requirements. Openings in chain link must not exceed 1.75 inches. Final inspection required before pool filling.
