Backyard recreational fires, campfires, and cookouts are allowed in Allen County without the open-burning distance limits, but only wood products may be burned and the fire cannot create a smoke nuisance for neighbors.
Allen County Code 8-20-4-1 exempts recreational fires from the distance requirements that apply to other open burning, expressly allowing campfires, cookout fires, and bonfires 'in connection with recreational activities.' The countywide limit still applies: under 8-20-2-2 only wood products may be burned, and the fire must not emit smoke that causes annoyance or a nuisance interfering with a neighbor's health or enjoyment of their home. Indiana's 326 IAC 4-1 conditions also apply statewide: keep the fire attended, have firefighting equipment ready, don't ignite more than two hours before use, and avoid burning during high winds or Air Quality Action Days.
A recreational fire that burns prohibited materials or creates a nuisance is an infraction, subject to a $25 fine (up to $2,500 if willful) under AC 8-20-5.
