A contained recreational cooking fire needs no permit, but a true backyard bonfire does. Weld County Public Health allows only one bonfire per year per address, permitted only for the day of the event, and never during a fire ban.
Weld County distinguishes small contained cooking fires from open bonfires. A recreational cooking fire in a fireplace, portable fire pit or chiminea is exempt from permitting. A larger bonfire is open burning and needs a permit: Weld County Department of Public Health allows one bonfire a year per address and issues the permit only for the day of the event. Some fire districts, such as Frederick-Firestone, require an additional special recreational burn permit reviewed case by case. All bonfires are subject to the same wind, hour and Red Air Alert limits as other open burning and are prohibited during fire restrictions.
An unpermitted bonfire, a fire lit during a ban, or an escaped fire can bring air-quality enforcement, suppression cost-recovery, and civil liability for damage.
