Broward County requires property owners to keep vacant lots and yard edges free of dense fire-prone vegetation, with enforcement by Code Enforcement and the Forest Service.
Broward County Code of Ordinances Chapter 8.5 (Nuisance Abatement) requires owners of developed and vacant properties to remove overgrown vegetation that threatens public safety, which includes fire hazards during the February to May dry season. Although Broward lacks a California-style defensible-space statute, properties in the wildland-urban interface are encouraged by the Florida Forest Service to maintain a 30-foot noncombustible perimeter, prune tree limbs at least 6 feet up from the ground, and remove palm fronds and other accumulated debris. Code Enforcement can issue notices of violation for properties with vegetation over 18 inches that harbors fire fuel or pests. Fines start at $100 per day and escalate if ignored. The county may abate nuisance growth and lien the property for costs.
