Wichita, KS Fire Regulations: Brush Clearance (2026)

Wichita Code Chapter 7.04 (Weeds and Grass) prohibits property owners from allowing weeds, grass, brush, or other rank vegetation to grow taller than 12 inches on any improved or unimproved lot within the city. The Office of Central Inspection enforces this rule and may issue a notice giving the owner 10 days to abate the nuisance before the city contracts the cutting and assesses costs to the property tax bill. Wichita does not impose a defensible-space buffer of the kind found in California wildfire zones, but the dry continental climate combined with tornado-flattened debris means that overgrown lots are treated seriously, particularly along railroad rights-of-way and undeveloped tracts on the urban fringe. Owners adjacent to the Arkansas River or Chisholm Creek floodways should also coordinate with the city forester before clearing dense riparian brush, since some areas are designated wildlife habitat under the Wichita Wild park system. Routine yard maintenance, agricultural row crops, and ornamental landscaping are exempt as long as the vegetation is intentionally cultivated and maintained.
