Wichita Fire Code Chapter 15 caps residential propane storage at small consumer cylinders and prohibits indoor storage of larger tanks. Commercial bulk propane facilities require Wichita Fire Department permits and setbacks from property lines and ignition sources.
Wichita adopts the International Fire Code with amendments through Chapter 15. Residential propane is generally limited to consumer cylinders such as twenty-pound grill tanks, and only one or two cylinders may be stored on a property without a permit. Indoor storage of any propane cylinder is prohibited inside dwellings, and basement storage is banned regardless of size. Commercial bulk plants and dispensing stations require a Fire Department operational permit, distance separation from property lines and buildings, vehicle impact protection, and trained operators. Apartment balconies have particularly tight limits because of egress and life safety risk.
Fire Marshal correction orders, condemnation of stored cylinders, civil penalties, possible permit denial, and increased liability after any propane incident.
