Wichita generally allows on-street parking on residential streets unless signs indicate otherwise. Vehicles must be parked within 12 inches of the curb, in the direction of travel, and must be moved at least every 48 hours to avoid being tagged as abandoned.
Wichita Code Title 11 (Traffic) governs on-street parking citywide. On most residential streets, parking is permitted along both sides of the street unless signed otherwise, but vehicles must be parked parallel to the curb, within 12 inches of it, and headed in the direction of travel. Parking is prohibited within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, 20 feet of a crosswalk, 30 feet of a stop sign or signal, in front of a driveway, on a sidewalk, or within an intersection. The Downtown Wichita district uses metered parking with hours generally 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, and several entertainment districts including Old Town and Delano have time-limited zones enforced by Park Wichita. Snow emergencies declared by the Public Works Department trigger temporary parking bans on designated snow routes to allow plowing. During tornado warnings, residents are encouraged to move vehicles off streets to allow emergency access, although there is no automatic parking ban. Vehicles left in the same on-street location for more than 48 hours may be tagged as abandoned and subsequently towed under Kansas Statute Section 8-1102.
Specific penalty amounts for this ordinance are not published in a publicly accessible fine schedule. Contact Wichita code enforcement directly for current fines, enforcement procedures, and hearing options.
