Wichita restricts parking of commercial vehicles over 12,000 pounds gross vehicle weight or longer than 22 feet in residential zones. Such vehicles may not be parked on city streets or in residential driveways for more than 2 hours except for active loading, unloading, or service calls.
Under the Wichita Code of Ordinances and the Unified Zoning Code, commercial vehicles including semi-tractors, trailers, dump trucks, box trucks over 12,000 pounds GVWR, and other heavy equipment are prohibited from extended parking on residential streets or in driveways within zones designated for single-family or two-family use. Short-term stops of up to 2 hours are permitted for active loading, unloading, deliveries, or service calls such as plumbing, HVAC, and contractor work at the property being served. Pickup trucks, vans, and small commercial vehicles under the weight threshold may be parked at a residence as long as they fit entirely on an improved surface and do not display signage exceeding zoning limits for home-based businesses. Trailers, including utility, boat, and travel trailers, are subject to the same residential storage limits as RVs. Commercial vehicles must be parked at the operator's commercial premises, an industrial-zoned lot, or an approved truck terminal overnight. Aviation-related vehicles serving Spirit AeroSystems, Textron Aviation, and the McConnell Air Force Base corridor often use designated industrial lots in southeast Wichita rather than residential streets.
Specific penalty amounts for this ordinance are not published in a publicly accessible fine schedule. Contact Wichita code enforcement directly for current fines, enforcement procedures, and hearing options.
