The Louisiana Liquefied Petroleum Gas Commission regulates propane storage, installation, and dispensing statewide under RS 40:1846 et seq., requiring licensed installers, NFPA 58 compliance, and tank registration that preempts most local technical standards.
Louisiana Revised Statutes 40:1846 through 40:1853 establish the LP-Gas Commission with exclusive authority to license dealers, installers, and transport operators handling propane in Louisiana. The Commission adopts the National Fire Protection Association NFPA 58 Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code as the statewide standard for tank siting, distance to buildings, container appurtenances, and hose specifications. Residential ASME tanks 125 gallons or larger must be installed by a licensed master fitter. Local governments may regulate land use and zoning location of bulk plants but cannot impose conflicting technical standards on container placement or fill operations.
Unlicensed installation or fill activity is a misdemeanor with civil penalties up to $1,000 per violation and possible referral for injunctive relief by the Commission.
