Except at one- and two-family homes, propane grills and LP-gas cooking devices may not be used, stored, or lit on any balcony, patio, under an overhang, or within 15 feet of a multifamily building. Larger LP-gas storage follows the adopted fire code.
Baltimore County adopts the International Fire Code with state and local amendments, enforced by the Office of the Fire Marshal. For multifamily properties, the county fire code prohibits using, storing, or kindling any gas-fired grill, charcoal grill, hibachi, electric grill, deep fryer, or similar device on any balcony or patio, under any overhang, or within 15 feet of a multifamily occupancy. This effectively bars storing propane cylinders on apartment and condo balconies. One- and two-family dwellings are exempt from that restriction, but larger LP-gas quantities and commercial storage are still governed by fire-code limits.
Storing propane on a multifamily balcony or within 15 feet of the building violates the county fire code; the Fire Marshal can order removal and issue citations.
