Washington adopts the International Fire Code statewide. In apartments and other multifamily buildings, LP-gas (propane) cooking devices generally may not be operated on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction, with a limited exception for small 1-pound cylinders.
The State Building Code (chapter 19.27 RCW, WAC 51-54A) adopts the International Fire Code, so IFC Section 308.1.4 applies in Spokane County. LP-gas and open-flame cooking devices may not be operated on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction. Exceptions: one- and two-family dwellings; buildings, balconies, and decks protected by an automatic sprinkler system; and LP-gas cooking devices whose container water capacity is not greater than 2 1/2 pounds (nominal 1-pound propane capacity). Larger 20-pound BBQ cylinders should be stored outdoors, upright, away from heat and building openings; local fire codes limit the quantity of LP-gas stored at a residence.
Enforced by the local fire code official / fire marshal under the adopted IFC; violations can bring code-enforcement orders and fines.
