Rhode Island enforces a uniform Comprehensive Fire Safety Code regulating propane storage statewide. RIGL 23-28.1 adopts NFPA 58 standards through the State Fire Marshal, preempting inconsistent municipal storage rules.
Under RIGL 23-28.1 and the Rhode Island Fire Safety Code (450-RICR), propane storage must comply with NFPA 58 (Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code) as adopted by the State Fire Marshal. Residential cylinder storage outdoors is limited; cylinders larger than 100 pounds water capacity require permits and minimum setbacks from buildings, lot lines, and ignition sources. Indoor storage of cylinders over 1 pound is generally prohibited in residences. Larger tanks require Fire Marshal installation permits. Local fire chiefs enforce the code but cannot adopt conflicting standards. The Code Adoption Review Board ensures uniformity statewide.
Code violations may result in stop-use orders, fines up to $500 per violation, and equipment removal under RIGL 23-28.1-7.
