Providence County cities prohibit sidewalk blocking and unpaved front-yard parking. Providence Code ยง23-21 and Cranston Code require paved driveway surfaces. Curb cuts require permits from DPW and, on state roads, RIDOT.
Providence Code ยง23-21 and Zoning ยง1906 prohibit parking on unpaved front-yard surfaces and require approved driveway paving (asphalt, concrete, or pavers). Blocking public sidewalks is prohibited under Providence Code ยง17-184 and similar ordinances in Pawtucket, Cranston (Code ยง10.32), East Providence, and Woonsocket. Driveway widening, new curb cuts, or apron modifications require a permit from the municipal Department of Public Works; on RIDOT-maintained roads (state routes and numbered highways) RIDOT Physical Alteration Permit is also required. Inoperable or unregistered vehicles cannot be stored in driveways under RI Housing Code and local property maintenance ordinances (e.g., Providence Code ยง14-89). Dense triple-decker lots in Central Falls and Pawtucket often have non-conforming driveways grandfathered at substandard widths.
Sidewalk blocking: Providence $25 to $100 citation, tow risk. Unpaved parking (front yard): Providence code enforcement notice, $50 to $300 fine. Unpermitted curb cut: $100 to $500 plus restoration cost. Stored inoperable vehicle: abatement notice and tow.
