Providence Code §23-21 and Zoning §1906 prohibit parking on unpaved front-yard surfaces and require approved driveway paving (asphalt, concrete, or pavers). Blocking public sidewalks is prohibited under Providence Code §17-184 and similar ordinances in Pawtucket, Cranston (Code §10.32), East Providence, and Woonsocket. Driveway widening, new curb cuts, or apron modifications require a permit from the municipal Department of Public Works; on RIDOT-maintained roads (state routes and numbered highways) RIDOT Physical Alteration Permit is also required. Inoperable or unregistered vehicles cannot be stored in driveways under RI Housing Code and local property maintenance ordinances (e.g., Providence Code §14-89). Dense triple-decker lots in Central Falls and Pawtucket often have non-conforming driveways grandfathered at substandard widths.
