Propane storage follows Virginia's Statewide Fire Prevention Code (adopted IFC). On combustible balconies and within 10 feet of combustible construction, LP-gas containers are limited to one pound or less; larger cylinders must be stored and used outdoors, away from buildings.
Prince William County enforces LP-gas (propane) storage under Virginia's Statewide Fire Prevention Code, which adopts the International Fire Code Chapter 3 and NFPA standards. The most commonly encountered residential rule limits LP-gas containers on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction to a capacity of one pound or less — so 20-lb barbecue cylinders may not be stored or used on wood apartment balconies. Spare cylinders should be stored outdoors, upright, away from ignition sources and building openings, never inside a home or garage. Bulk and commercial LP-gas installations require Fire Marshal permits and inspection.
The Fire Marshal's Office may order removal of improperly stored cylinders and cite violations of the Statewide Fire Prevention Code; unsafe conditions can be abated as fire hazards.
