Yellowstone County follows Montana's adopted International Fire Code (2021) for propane and LP-gas storage. The code limits LP-gas container sizes, storage locations and quantities. There is no unique county propane ordinance; state fire-code and NFPA 58 standards govern tanks and cylinders.
Montana has adopted the International Fire Code, 2021 edition, statewide under ARM 23.12.601, which incorporates the LP-gas provisions of IFC Chapter 61 and NFPA 58. These set container size limits, separation distances from buildings and property lines, and rules for cylinder storage and exchange. For residential grilling, IFC 308.1.4 caps balcony-adjacent LP-gas cooking containers at 2.5 pounds water capacity. Larger stationary propane tanks and multiple-cylinder storage must meet fire-code clearances and, where a building permit applies, be inspected. Yellowstone County does not publish a separate propane-storage ordinance; the state fire marshal's adopted code and any city fire code (e.g., Billings) apply. Check with the local fire authority before installing a large tank.
Storing propane in violation of the adopted fire code is a code violation enforced by the state or local fire authority; correction orders and penalties apply, and unsafe installations may be red-tagged.
