Pima County, AZ Fire Regulations: Smoke Detectors (2026)

Pima County enforces smoke detector requirements through the adopted International Residential Code (IRC). New residential construction requires hardwired, interconnected smoke alarms with battery backup in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home including basements. Existing homes must have working smoke detectors but may use battery-only units. Rental properties must have functioning smoke detectors at the time of tenant occupancy under the Arizona Residential Landlord Tenant Act. Fire districts serving unincorporated areas conduct public education campaigns and may provide free smoke detectors to residents. The extreme heat in Pima County (summer temperatures regularly exceeding 110F) can affect battery performance, and fire safety officials recommend testing detectors monthly and replacing batteries at least annually. Detectors should be replaced every 10 years per manufacturer recommendations. Combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are increasingly recommended, especially for homes with gas appliances.
