CO alarms required within 15 ft of each sleeping area under Amanda's Law (Public Health Law Sec 377). Rental dwellings must have detectors installed and maintained by the landlord; tenants must notify of malfunction. Enforcement via municipal building/fire inspectors; County fire marshal handles multi-jurisdictional cases.
Failure to install: up to $250 first offense under Exec Law. Tampering or removal by occupant: up to $500. Rental non-compliance may trigger certificate of occupancy revocation.
