East Providence, RI Fire Regulations: Wildfire Zones (2026)

Unlike western states, Rhode Island does not designate wildfire hazard severity zones (no WUI maps or CAL FIRE-equivalent) and has no statewide defensible space law. Providence County is the most urbanized county in the state, consisting of Providence, Cranston, Pawtucket, Woonsocket, North Providence, Johnston, and surrounding communities with minimal wildland-urban interface. Wildfire risk is managed primarily through open burning restrictions: RIGL §2-12 and §23-28.11 give RI DEM Division of Forest Environment and local fire chiefs authority to prohibit outdoor burning during dry conditions. DEM issues statewide Red Flag Warnings and burn bans during elevated fire-weather. RIGL §23-28.2 adopts NFPA 1 Fire Code and NFPA 101 Life Safety Code statewide, applied by the RI State Fire Marshal and local Fire Code Boards of Appeal. The RI State Building Code (SBC-1) based on IBC applies to new construction; fire-resistant roofing (Class A-C) is required only per IBC Chapter 15 based on building use, not wildfire zone. Homeowners insurance carriers may independently require vegetation management in rural parts of the state (Foster, Glocester, Scituate, Burrillville border forest areas) but this is not a code requirement.
