Houston does not have designated wildfire risk zones within its city limits. The Houston Fire Code, based on the International Fire Code, contains general wildfire-risk provisions but these are largely inapplicable in Houston's urban Gulf Coast setting.
Houston adopts the International Fire Code (IFC) with local amendments. The IFC contains provisions for wildfire risk areas, including operational permit requirements for open-flame devices in designated risk zones. However, Houston's flat Gulf Coast terrain, humid subtropical climate, and heavily urbanized landscape mean wildfire risk designations are not applied within city limits. The Texas A&M Forest Service maintains wildfire risk maps, and the Houston area is generally classified as low risk. Unincorporated Harris County areas near Sam Houston National Forest to the north may carry higher risk.
Not applicable within Houston city limits. In designated wildfire risk areas elsewhere in Texas, IFC violations can result in fire code citations and fines.
