Hillandale CDP (part), Montgomery County, Maryland Fire Regulations: Wildfire Zones Rules (2026)

Montgomery County benefits from a humid subtropical climate with average annual rainfall exceeding 40 inches, which dramatically reduces wildfire risk compared to western and southern US jurisdictions. The county does not designate any wildfire hazard severity zones, does not require wildland-urban interface (WUI) defensible space, and does not mandate fire-resistant roofing or building materials for wildfire purposes. The Chesapeake Bay watershed environment maintains relatively high soil and vegetation moisture year-round. However, occasional summer droughts and fall dry periods can temporarily increase fire risk, particularly in the agricultural reserve covering the northern and western portions of the county and in heavily wooded areas around Seneca Creek State Park, Little Bennett Regional Park, and along the Potomac River corridor. During these periods, MCFRS may issue burn bans and increased awareness alerts. The Maryland Forest Service provides wildfire risk assessment statewide but Montgomery County consistently ranks as low risk. Structural firefighting remains the primary focus of MCFRS, which operates 37 stations throughout the county.
