Baltimore County is not in a designated wildfire hazard zone and has no WUI defensible-space or fire-hardening code. Maryland's wildfire risk is low; open fires are instead controlled by the county open-burning rules and the seasonal state burn ban.
Unlike western states, Maryland does not designate wildland-urban-interface (WUI) fire zones, and Baltimore County imposes no defensible-space clearance, ignition-resistant construction, or wildfire-zone building requirements. Wildfire risk in the county is low. Fire prevention is instead handled through open-burning controls: COMAR 26.11.07 prohibits open fires except as permitted, a statewide open-burning ban runs June 1 through August 31, and the county bans burning inside the Beltway and leaf burning countywide. The Maryland Forest Service may issue temporary statewide burn bans during dry, high-risk conditions.
There are no wildfire-zone code penalties; violations of the applicable open-burning restrictions are enforced by the Fire Marshal and Maryland Department of the Environment.
