Iowa allows permitless concealed carry for adults 21 and older as of 2021, while still issuing optional non-professional permits for reciprocity.
Iowa Code chapter 724 governs the carrying of weapons. Since House File 756 took effect July 1, 2021, Iowa is a permitless (constitutional) carry state, meaning lawful adults age 21 or older who are not prohibited persons may carry a concealed handgun without a permit. The state still issues nonprofessional permits to carry weapons under sections 724.7 through 724.11 for residents who want reciprocity in other states. Carrying remains prohibited in courthouses, schools, and other restricted locations.
Carrying while a prohibited person or in a restricted location is a serious or aggravated misdemeanor under Iowa law.
