The statute has been used to invalidate local attempts at assault weapon bans, ammunition limits, or registration schemes. Local zoning may still address gun shops as land uses, but content-based firearm regulation is barred.
Local ordinances conflicting with state firearm law are unenforceable; municipalities adopting them may face declaratory judgments and attorney fee awards.
