New Mexico permits adults to carry a loaded firearm in a private vehicle without a permit, treating the vehicle as an extension of the home, though concealed carry on the person still requires a license.
Under NMSA 1978 Section 30-7-2, it is unlawful to carry a concealed loaded firearm anywhere except in the carrier's residence, on real property belonging to the carrier, or in a private automobile or other private means of conveyance for lawful protection. The statutory exception for private vehicles allows adults legally permitted to possess firearms to keep a loaded handgun in the glove box, console, or other location in their vehicle without a concealed handgun license. Carrying concealed on the person while outside the vehicle still requires a CHL under NMSA Chapter 29 Article 19. Vehicles parked on school premises or in courthouse lots remain subject to location-based restrictions in Section 30-7-2.1 and related statutes.
Unlawful carrying of a deadly weapon outside the vehicle exception is a petty misdemeanor; carrying on school premises is a fourth-degree felony with enhanced penalties.
