ORC 2923.16 controls the improper handling of firearms in a motor vehicle. Since SB 215 took effect in 2022, qualifying adults 21 and older who are not legally prohibited may carry a loaded handgun concealed inside a vehicle without a permit. Long guns transported in a vehicle generally must be unloaded under ORC 2923.16(B). Drivers stopped by law enforcement must comply with officer instructions, and additional rules apply when alcohol or drugs are involved.
