Utah Code 76-10-505 and related sections govern carrying firearms in vehicles, allowing loaded carry by qualifying adults under permitless carry while preempting local rules.
Utah Code 76-10-505 historically prohibited carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle without a concealed carry permit, except for unloaded long guns or pistols stored separately from ammunition. Following 2021 legislation enacting permitless concealed carry, adults 21 or older who may lawfully possess a firearm may carry loaded firearms in private vehicles without a permit. Section 76-10-504 addresses concealed carry generally, and Section 53-5a-102 preempts local ordinances regulating vehicle firearm transport. Carrying loaded firearms in vehicles by persons under 21 without a permit, or by prohibited persons, remains a criminal offense. Restrictions still apply in school zones and certain secure areas.
Unlawful loaded carry in a vehicle by a non-qualifying person is generally a class B misdemeanor under Section 76-10-505, with enhanced penalties for prohibited persons or restricted locations.
