Paramus issues no more than two garage sale licenses for the same premises within one calendar year, with limited exceptions for property transfers and separate residential units on the same lot.
Chapter 256 of the Paramus Borough Code caps the number of garage sale licenses issued per property at two per calendar year. If the property is sold or transferred within the same calendar year, the new owner may obtain an additional license despite the cap. Where multiple residential units exist on the same premises, a separate license may be issued for each unit. The frequency cap is intended to prevent properties from operating as informal year-round retail establishments. The Borough Clerk tracks licenses issued per address, and the Police Department or Quality of Life Officer may investigate suspected serial sales.
Holding a third sale at the same premises within a calendar year without qualifying for an exception is a Chapter 256 violation subject to Β§ 1-15 penalties up to $2,000 plus possible referral to zoning for unauthorized commercial use.
