The county's Unified Development Ordinance treats garage sales as a minor temporary use and, instead of a permit, sets plain limits: no more than four sales per property per year, each running no longer than three consecutive days, and only personal property belonging to the resident may be sold, not merchandise bought for resale. On-site signs are capped at four square feet and cannot be placed off the property. Inside the towns, Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Hillsborough apply their own sale and sign rules.
