Los Angeles does not require a garage sale permit, but limits each residential property to a maximum of two garage sales per calendar year under LAMC 21.43. Each sale may not exceed two consecutive days. Signs may not be placed on public property, utility poles, or street trees. Violations carry fines up to $250.
Los Angeles Municipal Code (LAMC) Section 21.43 regulates garage sales, yard sales, and similar residential resale events without requiring a permit, but tightly capping their frequency. Each residential property is limited to no more than two garage sales per calendar year, and each event may not exceed two consecutive days in duration. Sales must take place on the seller's own residential property β not on sidewalks, parkways, or vacant lots β and only personal household items may be sold (no new merchandise or commercial inventory).
Sign placement is regulated separately under LAMC 28.04. Garage sale signs may not be attached to utility poles, traffic signs, street trees, or any public right-of-way. Signs are permitted only on the seller's own property and must be removed immediately after the sale ends. Code Enforcement and LAPD officers may issue citations for improperly posted signs or for exceeding the two-sale annual cap.
Violating the two-sale-per-year limit or operating an unpermitted commercial-style sale is an infraction punishable by fines up to $250 for a first offense, with escalating fines for repeat offenses. Illegal sign posting on public property carries a separate fine of $100 per sign plus removal costs. Report violations to LA 3-1-1.
