Tampa requires a free garage sale permit from the Neighborhood Enhancement department before each sale. Properties are limited to three permits per calendar year, each lasting up to three consecutive days. Hours are 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Signs may only be placed on the sale property. Violations carry $100-$500 fines.
Tampa's Code of Ordinances Chapter 24 requires a free garage sale permit before any residential garage sale, yard sale, or estate sale within city limits. Permits are issued by the Neighborhood Enhancement Division and can be applied for online through the city portal or in person at Tampa Municipal Office Building. Applications must be submitted at least three business days in advance. Each residential address is limited to three permitted sales per calendar year, with each sale lasting up to three consecutive days. Permitted hours are 7:00 AM through 7:00 PM.
Signage rules are strict: signs may be placed only on the actual sale property itself. Tampa prohibits garage sale signs on utility poles, traffic-control signs, street trees, medians, sidewalks, or any other public right-of-way, and also on other private property without owner permission. Signs must be removed within 24 hours after the sale ends. Only personal used household goods belonging to the resident may be sold; new merchandise, commercial resale, or items brought in from off-site are prohibited and may trigger business license requirements.
Holding a garage sale without a permit is a code violation punishable by a fine of $100 for the first offense, $250 for the second, and $500 for the third within 12 months. Each day of unauthorized operation is a separate offense. Posting signs off-property carries a separate fine of $100 per sign plus removal cost.
