Cincinnati does not require a separate home occupation permit. Businesses must meet zoning conditions: max 25% floor area, one outside employee, no signage, no exterior changes.
Under Cincinnati zoning code (CMC Title XIV), home occupations are permitted as accessory uses in residential districts without a separate permit application, provided they meet all conditions. The business must be conducted entirely within the dwelling by residents of the home. No more than one non-resident employee may work at the premises. The home occupation must not occupy more than 25 percent of the gross floor area of the dwelling. There shall be no exterior alteration to the structure that changes its residential character, and no exterior signage advertising the business is permitted. Storage of hazardous materials, heavy equipment, or commercial inventory beyond what is incidental to the occupation is prohibited. Prohibited home occupations typically include auto repair, welding shops, and similar uses that generate noise, fumes, or heavy traffic. If a home business does not meet these conditions, the operator may need to apply for a conditional use or variance through the Board of Zoning Appeals. Complaints are investigated by the Department of Buildings and Inspections.
